How to prioritize your wants when home buying to make the process smoother? Searching for a home when you are buying can be more productive when you make a list of both wants AND needs. And then put all of those desires in order.
When you’re searching for a home, start with the absolutes like your budget, the general location, and if you need a move-in ready home. The more defined you can make your list of absolutes, wants, and needs, the closer you’ll come to finding your dream home. It’s even possible that you’ll be able to find more than one to choose from, if you stick to your list.
Next on the list? Prioritize your needs. Need a bedroom for each kid? Then that’s non-negotiable. Need a two-car garage? A house near your kid’s existing school or your job? Put these items first on the list. They are needs. Musts. Use these terms as your main search parameters, when looking online for houses.
Finally, fil in the details. Like: You’ve always wanted a mudroom. It’d be really cool if the kitchen had a wine fridge. Or a finished-out basement would make your teens happy to have their own space. Those are the kinds of details that aren’t make it or break it on a house, but if you find them in a house where all your wants are already satisfied, then that’s just an extra added bonus.
