It’s time to organize your basement in the fall. It doesn’t have to be just a dump for all the extra items, it can be a useful space! The kids are back in school, so you may have a little more time to think and organize. Start by deciding what you want to accomplish with your basement space and make a plan.

Whatever you decide, you can definitely add lots of shelving to your basement, so that you can still store things there, they’ll just be more organized. Basements can be large spaces, so they can actually serve several functions at once — from guest room to craft area to kid’s playroom. There are many practical things to do with a basement.

For Kids: A kids’ playroom, homework station, game room, music room with piano or sports equipment storage

For Parents: A TV room, sewing or craft room, man cave, work-out room or home office

Other ideas: A guest room, a second living area like a family room, wood/work shop or gift wrapping station

Whatever functions you choose, think about how you’ll layout the space in zones; a zone for each functionality. You can define different zones of the space with area rugs, dividers or a large piece of furniture like a cabinet. What large furniture will you need? What small items will you add to complete each area? Finally, make sure each zone has ample storage to keep all the items needed for that function.
